Wave Drowning Detection System
Wearable Tracker Headset
Innovative Technology that keeps swimmers safer. Designed by Allen Atelier.
Delivering meaningful value through better design
Wave’s first headset tracker was effective, but there were barriers that were holding it back from scaling adoption. The tracker would move up and down on the head, the pressure it applied was strong, it lacked brand identity, and it had more parts than needed, which increased manufacturing cost.
Allen Atelier’s first step was to go through several testing iterations to dial in the fit and comfort to ensure the headset provided security of fit during physical activity like jumping in the water.
By connecting with local schools and aquatic centers, like Boys and Girls Club, we were able to rapidly test protoypes for comfort and security of fit for the ideal range of users. Through this testing, we were developed a new handband profile that did not move on the wearer head during the most intensive activities less applied pressure. To further increase comfort and long term wearability, we kept the areas of the tracker thin that wrapped behind the ears.
To decrease cost, we reduced the number of parts from 9 to 5 reducing the numner of molds needed, which reduced the number of molds from 3 down to one. In addition, it made the assembling of the units faster and easier for the manufacturing team while elevating the overall fit and finish of the product.
The Outcome
The newly designed tracker checked off all the boxes for comfort, fit, brand identity, and reduced manufacturing costs. This evolution of the headset supported Wave in scaling the adoption of the system from less than 100 facilities to over 125 facilities in less than a years time.
