Shell & Tube Heat Exchanger

The shell and tube exchanger accomplishes its cooling task by circulating a hot liquid around tubes which contain a cooler liquid. The hot liquid circulates in an enclosed area called the shell. Tubes containing the cooler liquid are looped through the shell. A shell and tube heat exchanger is a device where two working fluids exchange heat by thermal contact using tubes housed within a cylindrical shell. The fluid temperature inside the shell and tube are different and this temperature difference is the driving force for temperature exchange. Heat exchanger functions by transferring heat from higher to lower temperatures. Heat can thus be transferred from the hot fluid to the cold fluid if a hot fluid and a cold fluid are separated by a heat-conducting surface. The operation of a heat exchanger is governed by thermodynamics.
